Graphic Media Work Discussion

My graphic media project on Nature and Ecology proved to be more complex and more of a challenge in comparison to the previous two projects. However at the same time it allowed me to explore a whole new interesting idea that I have never focused on before.

My project is based Biomimicry, I chose this topic because I knew it would be a unique subject to explore and have an interesting outcome for my poster. As Biomimicry consists of using features and aspects of nature to explore and make sufficient man made things. I knew I wanted to make imagery that took the meaning of Biomimicry seriously and specifically. Something that was a representation of nature, combined with some sort of technology or machinery. This would hopefully then push the message of how we owe so much to nature and what is had to offer, our environment has inspired so much we now take advantage of. Out of centuries of evolution we have tired to push progression within the modern world. However instead of growing with nature we have resulted in taking over and destroying it, the very thing that we have taken so many ideas and progressive thoughts from is now being destroyed by us. It takes the whole idea of what nature and goes against it’s very existence. As nature has always been about adaptation and effectively using the world around you to progress, however now we have taken advantage of this and have gone against it by creating machines. This is due to mass population and wanting the ability to make aspects of life easier, such as survival and living comfortably. Natures loss is our gain.

I really resinated with Andrew Browns text ‘Art and Ecology Now’. Specifically when he discusses the origin of nature based artwork and how cave paints have been discovered that consist of simplistic drawings of animals and hunting imagery. They were created using minerals from the earth, which connects it directly to nature. I love this aspect because it really creates a symbolic meaning to the artwork and the incredible history it entails. We are able to then see how nature based artwork evolves from this and how we evolved with nature as well. This links and is the whole bases for the idea of Biomimicry. We use nature to progress and move forward, and with that so does the art work around it.

Roxana Halls is an English Painter who is well known for her work and her ideas in how she breaks down the stereotypes of femininity in a polite and almost comedic way. Similarly to Wiley’s work she understands the traditional representation of women’s portraits from years ago, women would not smile. Showing teeth was most likely an ugly trait and so Halls challenges this with almost every one of her paintings. She also puts a lot of time into the subject of women and food, the idea that a woman with a large appetite is not a feminine trait. William Pope.L - The Great White Way: 22 miles, 5 years, 1 street (2002-2007) | 06/10/2020

  Visual artist William Pope.L Performance art piece 'The Great White Way' was a statement for the streets of New York City. In the beginning of the 2000's he began crawling on his hands, knees, stomach, and elbows wearing a variety of different outfits and costumes. However, the performance that I am going to be discussing is when we dressed in a Superman costume and had a skateboard strapped to his back. Pope's intentions for this performance based artistry was in my opinion, a statement about the treatment of particular races and/or people from different walks of life. Superman as a character is a white man who flies above cities full of people who love and worship him. However Pope (who is a black man) had dressed in the same costume but, was instead, crawling and beneath everyone else around him in the city. Jan Švankmajer - Lunch (Food 1992).

Jan Svankmajer is a Czech is a filmmaker and artist who's body of work spans over a variety of media. One of his short films he made in 1992 called 'Food' is an example of a stop-motion animation using claymation and pixilation. Which is inspiration for my own animated outcome. I am going to focus more one the section titled 'Lunch' and the effects he used in order to create such an impressive piece of animation. This section of the film depicts two gentlemen sitting down to eat in a restaurant. It follows with a compilation of each man eating anything and everything around them, from the flowers to their shoes, the plates, even the table. It is meant to represent mans relationship with food and the routines we go through.
