Identity | Chosen Object

Moving on from our 'Walking' project, our next project focuses on the subject of 'Identity'. We were asked to pick an object that best describes or represents our own identity and be able to explain why.

I chose to discuss a denim jacket that I have had for a couple of years now, whilst also collecting and pinning badges onto it. These badges can be of anything from places, interests or frankly random. The ones I have currently are mostly of places I have been. I chose this object as I not only enjoy collecting things but also reflecting on good memories and places I have been with friends and family. I not only count it as a part of my identity myself, but it also has become something others identity me with. As I have been given badges and pins as gifts from family and friends, from places and days I have spent with them. These badges allow me to remember moments of my life I wished to not forget at the time, which I think is an important thing to hold onto. I have always considered myself to be quite a reflective person who tries to appreciate the smaller things, and having this jacket allows me to do that in a creative and adventurous way. I want to be able to wear my jacket and know where each badge came from and a happy memory to share along with it, that is something very special to me.

However, moving forward with the project of identity I have decided to look further than just my chosen object. In order to make a successful animation I have decided to focus on something else that means a lot to my own and identity and to many others as well. The theme of masculinity and femininity will be my main focus, more specifically how each is a term for someones traits or behavior but at the same time society only allows one to be tied to one gender. A man is masculine and a woman is feminine. As society develops and evolves we see changes in these stereotypes and many people feel they can be more open and expressive with their feelings, interests and overall personalities. However I still believe that there are many people who feel hurt by societies judgement of them because they do not conform to what is expected of them. They therefore stick out, making that a good or bad thing depending on the person.
